I was sad to learn that The Independent is poised to publish its last issue this weekend. I devour newspapers and read the paper weekly. I would have liked to have seen a newsier package, but the feature writing and especially the photography made the paper worthwhile. The key missing ingredient, though, was advertising, which is necessary to keep any paper - especially an upstart weekly - publishing.
I wish the staff well. I've been in similar shoes. I wrote for the Sunday Express for several years until it published its last issue in August 1991. The Sunday Express got a pretty good run. The company that owned it said they would publish the paper for five years, and that's about how long it operated. We were devastated to see it end, but a paper that can't earn back a profit for its owners is hard to justify. We all landed on our feet. I'm sure the same will come for the Independent's staffers.
