Will Powers, Kissing with Confidence
Will Powers never existed. He was a name and persona concocted by Lynn Goldsmith, who is best known for iconic photographs of Bruce Springsteen and other rock luminaries. In 1983, she had a left-field hit single in the UK with Kissing with Confidence, which featured a ripped-from-the-public-health-textbook style of narration ... and the unmistakeable, yet uncredited, Carly Simon singing. Simon's own website has a page on the project, including the lyrics, which were years ahead of Stuart Smalley and his daily affirmations.
I don't think the tune was much of a hit on this side of the Atlantic, although I remember the video, and the wacky tune that went with it (I did not know, though, that Todd Rundgren and Steve Winwood helped write it). It's wayyy dated, but still a laugh.
