I still remember the newspaper ad (to sell cars) that depicted a city bus with the destination sign reading: Freaks and Weirdos. It caused a lot of fuss and made it to national cbc radio news. It was a typical Vancouver moment for me, for all the talk of environmentalism on the west coast they are image obsessed and you're judged heavily on how much money you look like you have.

The last year I was in BC it was ranked as the biggest user of energy (compared to other provinces); this in a province where most of the population huddles around the part that gets no snow and less summer heat than what makes air conditioning necessary.
