Embalming, up close and personal From the Morning News webzine, a fascinating read on what exactly happens during embalming. We're surrounded by dead bodies in pop culture: the CSI franchises alone have kind of inured us to autopsies, for instance, so much so that it's no longer shocking to see a body sliced apart for forensic study. This essay doesn't have gory pictures of any kind, and relies only on words for the full effect.

Hagar the hot: Rebranding novels George Murray is running a contest over at Bookninja which will hopefully turn up some chuckles. Take a novel, rebrand it with a new made-to-fly-off-the-shelves cover, and send it. Results to be posted after this coming weekend, I think. Above is one of Bookninja's offers to get the bait-and-switch contest going: an imaginative redo of Margaret Laurence's The Stone Angel.
