Following the death of J.D. Salinger, the New York Times' James Barron (the voice of the NYT's Front Page podcast, incidentally) put together a terrific piece on a key element of the novel: the role that New York City itself plays in Catcher in the Rye. I had forgotten how evocative the descriptions of Manhattan were, although as Barron points out, Salinger wrote as much about a specific time as a place.
