Old Spice has been reinventing itself as not just a viable but a vibrant brand with clever commercials that are simultaneously retro-minded, funny and ingeniously executed. The current splashy model is labelled The Man Your Man Could Smell Like, which features a very confident man in a shower, who is then on a boat and finally (as seen above) on a horse. You'd know that if you only heard the ad, because he tells you that.
The first video below is the commercial. The second is an interview Leo LaPorte of TWiT did with ad writers Craig Allen and Allen Kallman (of Wieden + Kennedy), who reveal that not only was no CGI used in the ad (well, almost none - just a little cleanup in the final frames, like the one above). Instead, only a very small number of visual effects were blended in (the diamonds sequence), plus some ingenious prop moving. It did, though, take three days to get the flowing sequence in the can. As they put it, much of the success is due to actor Isaiah Mustafa, who made a wise choice in auditioning with an over-the-top line read.
