John, I find the best bet if you're interested in registering for this sort of thing is set up an account with Yahoo or one of the free providers ... they mostly have decent spam filters and the junk stuff never comes near your main e-mail.

Even better, you can use bugmenot.com for most free sites that require registration. It's got a database of active username/password combinations that help with this very problem. (Paid sites are usually quickly removed from said database due to obvious legalities, this is geared towards free sites that require personal info)

Oops - meant also to mention 10minutemail.com - provides you with a disposable address for exactly 10 minutes for clicking on confirmation links.
