Last month, I read Sally Bedell Smith's Elizabeth The Queen, a biography that is both extensively reported (she conducted hundreds of interviews) but full of things I did not know. A complex portrait of the Queen emerges, as well as others ... not the least of them being Prince Philip, who grew up in threadbare circumstances, has been known for a temper, has a true artistic talent and an eye for design, and knows quite a bit about science and technology. Smith includes a comment to the effect that Philip has been in every laboratory in the U.K. at one time or another.
And, yes, he has indeed been prone to walk into controversy by opening his mouth.
From The Independent, here's quite the list of gaffes Philip has made over the years. The title, for instance, is what he said to a nursing home resident in a wheelchair during a 2002 visit.
